Lloyd James "You gotta be fuckin' kidding."

An excellent melodic black/death album, with songwriting that's entirely compelling and memorable on its own merits - so much so that it inspired me to watch 'The Thing' for the first time to appreciate the album better. Favorite track: Jaws of Life.

Sleeping Villager This is an incredible album, as cohesive as it is unique. An obvious contender for my AOTY list. Favorite track: Blair Built a Spaceship.

Jason Gilbert I am truly blown away by this album. John Carpenter’s The Thing is my favorite horror movie and it’s tucked quite firmly into my top ten overall favorite films. I feel fortunate to have snagged a copy of this bad boy. Every metal fan should have this in their collection…. Every… fucking… one.

The Thaw 02:17
Australis ignite A continent left stranded The signal fire sputters and dies We’re not alone but abandoned A scratch on the tip of the iceberg A drop in the water drowning the earth Bones of leviathan once submerged Brought up to thin the herd Australis ignite A continent left stranded The signal fire sputters and dies We’re not alone but abandoned

In the glaciers of eden There’s nothing but echoes and ice A universe beneath our feet Glowing like the stars at night A gift from above below Our new god is a virus A parasite in permafrost Thawing inside of us The wolf’s not a wolf, it’s an ark The cold doesn’t freeze, it’s a spark Like roots, the tentacles grow Life burning at 100 below Awake beneath the ice Awake beneath the ice Asleep with open eyes Awake beneath the ice In the ruins of favor Every statue looks the same In every reflection A duality As if we’d even notice We don’t even know ourselves Would it even matter If we were something else? Awake beneath the ice Awake beneath the ice Asleep with open eyes Awake beneath the ice Iridescent light Warmth a world away What if we don't die but just echo on Every redundant day Something breathing Two hearts beating Frozen wrists bleeding One mouth feeding I am not myself I am not myself I am not myself I am not myself Icicles like teeth The bodies charred and broken Out here, everything drinks From any wound left open Wine from blood Water from the wine Over and over The cycle repeats To be born Is to die A truth we will never see Awake beneath the ice Awake beneath the ice Asleep with open eyes Awake beneath the ice

Entombed Exhumed Untold centuries of snow 1,000 miles from nowhere And still we’re not alone Genocide Suspended in motion Formaldehyde Filling the oceans Between us and them Between us and the end Between us and them Between us at the world’s end Man is the warmest place to hide Hibernating by default Lord knows we deserve it We've earned this Cut the line loose Vessels by design Imitations from the start Whatever we get We deserve it Promethean In its arrival We are moths Mistaking the flame for survival Remake Reanimate The dogs are dead, we’re now the dogs Slaves of a higher species Bred to do what we’re told Acetylene On the bonfire Of our vanities Even death is a lie here Between us and them Between us and the end Between us at the world's end Man is the warmest place to hide Step out of the cold and come inside Rest awhile beside the fire Embers in the hearth of our self-made suffering What’s left of ours is yours Open windows, unlocked doors Make yourself comfortable There’s nobody home anymore Anymore Anymore Anymore Perfect replications Of perfection’s failures Instant assimilation To our sphere of hatred

Jaws of Life 04:28
A severed head Animate on spider legs Hell’s frozen and heaven all out of pigs A hollow chest Writhing like the larvae’s nest What’s worse, death or what comes next Trapped inside My rotting body I’m not alone Something is in here with me A waking dream Turned to nightmare This isn’t death It’s birth by autopsy Unhinge the jaws of life Swallow the poison tongue Choke on the endless night As it eats the sun Evolution Devolution Abolition From the human condition Frozen flesh Warming to the scalpel’s touch Some things were not meant to wake up Nothing left To corrupt or neglect Except corruption’s architects Death by the oozing drop Blackened and bloodshot Sing the song of agony What once was is no more Once certain unsure The man you know is gone Get the flamethrower Abomination or creation Sums of the same equation This isn’t death We’re not that lucky Reincarnation, duplication Something lost in crude translation This isn’t death It’s mercy Abomination or creation Sums of the same equation This isn’t death We’re not that lucky

Terra-Form 05:05
Earth like a moon A stone in orbit Of a more crowded tomb Better get used to the feeling of being doomed The forms it assumes The life it subsumes Familiar but so different The forms it assumes The life it consumes Knotting like a noose Better get used to the feeling of being you Life is zero sum Every breath is to take Escape and kill us all Or freeze to death in this fucking place An alien terrain An ancient history never known It’s not colonizing Its coming home Constellation’s arrow Pierces the lungs It’s terraforming In our blood The cervix of extinction dilates Put Darwin’s head on the stake Flush the fetus down the drain It can’t hunt if there is no prey It can't take what's given away Earth like a moon A stone in orbit Of a more crowded tomb Better get used to the feeling of being doomed The forms it assumes The life it consumes Knotting like a noose Better get used to the feeling of being you

Lost myself again Hard time looking For something that never was The walls are closing in Watch the fires burning Immunity is having never been It darkens the doorway in my mind Dig it out I am, I am fine God grant us sight For the snowblind It darkens the doorway in my heart Dig it out I am, I am not As the planets align In the cataract stare of the snowblind Now I’ll give you What you gave me You wanted a monster So that’s what you made me From the shadows inside your head Now I’ll show you How well I know you Nothing needed But fear to control you A story told time and time again One of these things Is not like the other One of us is the thing From another world above us It darkens the doorway in my mind Dig it out I am, I am fine God grant us sight Sight for the snowblind It darkens the doorway in my heart Dig it out I am, I am not As the planets align In the stare of the snowblind Beyond the reach Of what we know to be Beyond everything Beyond the rings Of a frozen sun burning Unblinking Everything is and everything isn’t It can be real and in your head Nothing is lost it’s only hidden In the mouth of madness we descend Copper wire in the blood Mercury beneath your tongue Everything you ever loved Falls into oblivion Disinfect everything Wipe every surface clean We are not what seem Inside the fever of the dream Inside the skeletons we keep Cut the whiskey with the bleach Choke it down, ignore the sting We are not what we seem Inside the fever of the dream If I were an imitation A flawless imitation Could you tell if it Were really me If I were an imitation A flawless imitation Would even I know If I were me If it were really me If it were really me…

Man isn’t meant To be alone They locked me away But the sentence is their own Always defining self By someone else The fatal tell The final bluff The hand that’s dealt The secrets we’ve been keeping Are melting into being The truths we’ve been seeking Were never worth believing Blair built a spaceship Wings in the driving snow No matter where death takes you The stars will guide you home Blair built a spaceship Out of hope and steel No matter what you’ve become What you were was real Wearing through This skinsuit This flesh tomb This sewn-shut cocoon Can’t wash the smell of It off myself Idle hands Set me free Summit peaks I cannot reach Turn the master key Build the pyramids in multitudes Infinitudes Cities at their feet As far as eyes can see Branching out inside A body severed From its mind The things we keep inside Make up empires The things that keep us alive Just kill us quieter The secrets we’ve been keeping Are melting into being The truths we’ve been seeking We’re never worth believing This will be my last transmission If you’re hearing me, I didn’t make it I’m lighting out Letting go There’s nothing left in this world But the cold But the cold

There’s nothing written in the stars But a reflection We are the shape in the dark No atrocity we can’t justify No blame that we can’t pin Unable to tell the difference Between the sick and the sickness In the glaciers of Eden The snake changes shape In this garden where nothing grows There’s always plenty to eat In the cleaving of the ice We are all split in two Trapped on either side Of the lives we choose In tunnels beneath the snow Look upon every face you’ve ever known Face every sin you can’t atone There is no peace when you go In the light of the flares In the glint of mirrored stare Look upon yourself and despair We’re the only cancer here Hypothermic Hunger dormant Marks on the neck Where the frostbite has bitten Hidden incisions Of self vampirism Your spiritualism Won’t save you now Won’t help you tell This earth from hell There’s nothing written in the stars But a reflection We are the shape in the dark What if the feeling of Something watching you Came from inside Could you trust yourself Would you ever find A new place to hide Am I just a copy of a copy Of a copy of a copy Of a copy of a copy Of a copy of a copy Am I just Of a copy of a copy Of a copy of a copy Of a copy of a copy Of a copy Am I just A copy of a copy Of all the worst things That I tried to bury The original anger consuming me Every fiber of my inhuman being In the Glaciers of Eden There’s nothing but echoes and ice A universe beneath our feet Glowing like the stars at night A gift from above below Our new god is a virus A parasite in permafrost Thawing inside of us Nothing kills it But the flame Immolation To numb the pain Burning cairns Light the way Paths converging At the place where sky meets space Is it still suicide When you are something That you don’t recognize That you cannot define Save the bullet Don’t pull it You’d just be feeding fire to the furnace Is it still suicide When you are something That you don’t recognize Biding borrowed time Hold your nerve and Feel the burn of A lead placebo to heal what hurts you

about

Infection. Isolation. Paranoia. Everyday life in the year 2022 or the mood at United States National Institute Station 4 as winter (and something worse) closes in? Fliege draw that uneasy parallel on 'One Day They'll Wonder What Happened Here,' a sonic retelling of John Carpenter's iconic 1982 sci-fi classic 'The Thing.' The second full-length from the Queens shapeshifters, ODTWWHH runs the gamut of cosmic black and death metal, adding unexpected layers of dungeon synth, chorus-soaked new wave, and '80s shred as it exhumes its own mystery from the ice.
